Vernon Benedict Schaefer, the son of John Carl and Gertrude M. (Schuetz) Schaefer, was born March 21, 1918 in Mercier, Kansas. He attended the Mercier schools in his youth.

 

On April 17, 1940, Vernon was united in marriage to Florence Mable Peregrine at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Maryville, Missouri. For a short time, they lived and farmed in the Skidmore, Missouri area. In 1944, they moved to Westboro, Missouri where Vernon also farmed until retiring in 1980. Florence passed away on March 28, 1994. Vernon passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2009, at the University Of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, at the age of 91 years and 7 days.

 

Vernon enjoyed farming, fishing and playing cards, and most especially he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Tarkio, Missouri.

 

He is survived by one son, Vernon L. Schaefer and his wife, Linda S., of Tarkio; granddaughters, Lesa A. Shaw and Michael Gast, Westboro, Jamie M. and husband, Charles Walker, Helena, Missouri, and Wendy Peregrine, Tarkio; grandson, Vernon A. Schaefer and his wife, Laura G., Tarkio; numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; sisters, Thelma McGee, Overland Park, Kansas, Rose Willis, Horton, Kansas; brothers, Howard and Leo Schaefer, Horton, Kansas, Lloyd Schaefer, Effingham, Kansas, and Kenneth (Ike) Schaefer, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, and wife, Florence.

 

Graveside Services and Burial: 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, March 31, 2009, Center Grove Cemetery, Westboro.
There is no scheduled family visitation. Open visitation will begin at 9:00 A.M. Monday, Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio.
