Virgil Lee Mather, the son of Virgil E. and June A. (Powell) Mather, was born November 7, 1949, in Maryville, Missouri. Virgil attended Tarkio High School, Tarkio, Missouri.

 

On June 14, 1975, Virgil was united in marriage to Ruth Ann Hodge at the First Baptist Church, Tarkio. They became the parents of two children, Mistie and Randy. They later divorced.

 

Virgil was employed by Kyler Company, where he built tennis courts for over 20 years. Later, he worked for Tarkio Tire until 1999 when he was employed by Exide, Forest City, Missouri. Virgil retired in 2007.

 

Virgil enjoyed playing pool, washers, and cornhole. He also loved woodworking, cruising, drinking chocolate shakes, and watching Westerns. Virgil was an avid Chiefs fan and especially loved spending time with family and friends. Virgil passed away Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at Mosaic Life Care, St. Joseph, Missouri, at the age of 74.

 

Besides his parents, Virgil was preceded in death by sister, Tammy Moore, sister-in-law, Susie Mather; niece, Stacey (Mather) Knop, and nephew, Jeremy Mather; numerous aunts and uncles. Survivors include children, Mistie (James) Rightsell and Randy Mather, both of Tarkio; grandson, Christopher; siblings, Gary (Tammy) Mather, Kenny Mather, James (Susie) Mather, Phil (Maria) Mather, Steve (Barb) Mather, Marilyn (Melvin) Hicks, June (Dave) Tucker, and Connie (Ed) Gebhards; brother-in-law, Duane Moore; numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Graveside Service and Interment: 10:30 A.M., Sunday, November 19, 2023, Home Cemetery, Tarkio.

Open visitation will begin 9:00 A.M., Saturday, November 18, Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio, where the family will receive friends from 6:00-7:00 P.M.
