Vyvyan L. Martin
1925-2012
Watson, Missouri

Vyvyan Lucille (Madron) Martin was the fourth of six children born to Olin and Grace Matilda (Cooper) Madron on September 20, 1925, on a farm northeast of Langdon, Missouri. The family later moved to just south of Rock Port. She started school in Rock Port. In the third grade the family moved to a farm northeast of Watson. Vyvyan was a tomboy and was active and always interested in sports. She played on the Watson women’s high school basketball team that won several area tournaments. After graduating in 1943 as Valedictorian, she moved with her parents and two brothers to Rock Port where she worked as a switch board operator for the local telephone company. In April of 1943 just before her high school sweet heart, Jack Martin, left for the Army to serve in World War II, they became engaged. Vyvyan wrote Jack one or two letters every day from the time he left until he came home to marry her on June 12th, 1945.

When she was young, Vyvyan’s family had its share of sadness. Her brother Donald died following an accident when he was eight and she was only four and a half. Her mother died in 1944 when Vyvyan was only 19. Not yet married, she suddenly had to take over the household duties for her father and younger brothers Raymond and Merlyn.

After being discharged from the Army, Jack and Vyvyan settled east of Watson and raised three children. In 1965 Jack and Vyvyan decided to build her dream house on the Watson bluff amongst trees. She loved nature and took many fall and spring pictures of Jack and Reed farming. She filmed in detail the construction of I-29. She became a cloud and weather watcher. She always knew the forecast and reported to the family if a storm was on the way. Vyvyan lived 47 years in her house on the hill. Following a fall in July, she was receiving therapy at The Good Samaritan Home in Auburn, Nebraska, and was in hopes of returning to her home soon. Vyvyan passed away at the Nemaha County Hospital, Auburn, on August 14, 2012, at the age of 86. Jack and Vyvyan were members of the Rock Port United Methodist Church.

Vyvyan was very devoted to her family and loved to spend time with them and helping wherever needed. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Donald, Herbert, and Raymond, and a sister Mildred Husing. Jack passed away February 24, 2011, after 65 years of marriage. She is survived by her children, Linda Fries (Dan) of Fairfax, Reed Martin (Staci) of Watson, and JaNay Oestmann (Jim) of Auburn, Nebraska. Her grandchildren are Jack Fries of Wichita, Kansas, Meleia and Alexa Oestmann of Auburn, and Montana and Brock Martin of Watson. She is also survived by one brother, Merlyn and his wife Carol of McPherson, Kansas.
