W.D. Farmer
1921-2016
Kansas City, Missouri

W.D. (Buck) Farmer, the son of Ezra and Alma (Funkhouser) Farmer, was born July 3, 1921, in Atlanta, Missouri. He attended Atlanta High School, graduating in 1940. Buck entered the United States Army and served his country during World War II. He served in most of the European campaigns and was honorably discharged on January 8, 1946.

On November 9, 1946, Buck was united in marriage to Betty Sue Thompson at the Westport Presbyterian Church in Kansas City, Missouri. They became the parents of one daughter, Linda. In 1950, they purchased a home in Gashland, Missouri, which later became Kansas City, Missouri, where they lived to the present time.

Buck was employed for 38 years by Owens Corning Fiberglass as a millwright and special equipment maintenance group leader in the machine shop. Less than three years into his career, Buck received an award from the plant engineer for his suggestion concerning installing insulators on H. Line. Buck retired from Owens Corning on July 8, 1983. Buck’s philosophy was “Farmers Don’t Retire, They Just Change Fields.” He was then employed by Bargain Barn Furniture in Gladstone, Missouri, for 22 more years, retiring in 2006.

Buck was a member of the Gashland Evangelical Presbyterian Church and helped construct the building. He was also a member of the Millwright Union. Betty passed away September 13, 2013. Buck passed away with his daughter by his side, Friday, October 21, 2016, at his home in Kansas City, at the age of 95.

In addition to his parents and wife, Buck was preceded in death by sister, Mary Nedra Peterson and brother, Donnie Farmer. Survivors include daughter, Linda S. Casey, Fairfax, Missouri; grandson, James T. Casey, Carterville, Illinois; three great-grandsons, Zachary, Shane and Easton Casey; two sisters, Theda Smithson and Val Grafton, La Plata, Missouri; and numerous nieces and nephews.
