William H. Corken, the son of Hubert Stanley and Orpha Joyce (Farris) Corken was born September 10, 1931, in Maryville, Missouri. Bill graduated from Burlington Junction High School in 1949. Bill then attended Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, graduating in 1953. He then attended the University of Colorado, Boulder and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, graduating from the School of Banking.

 

On June 5, 1954, Bill was united in marriage to Jean Long at the Maryville United Methodist Church. They became the parents of two children, Craig and Laura and made their home in Rock Port, Missouri, from 1954 to 1998.

 

Bill taught school in Rock Port from 1954 to 1956, and in that year was employed by the Citizens Bank, Rock Port, where he worked for fourteen months. In May of 1957, Bill was employed by the Bank of Atchison County, also in Rock Port. During the 1970’s he was able to acquire an ownership interest in the bank, and served actively until his retirement in 1992. Bill passed away Sunday, April 27, 2014, at Village House Hospice, Lee’s Summit, Missouri, at the age of 82.

 

Bill was a former member of the Rock Port United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir from 1954 to 1998. He was the former chairman of the Community Hospital Board, Fairfax, Missouri, during its expansion in 1981, a member of the Rock Port Rotary Club from 1956 to 1992. Bill was instrumental in the organization of Missouri Beef Packers, west of Rock Port, a project that funneled thousands of jobs and millions of dollars into the area. Bill was an avid golfer and supporter of the Rock Port Country Club and enjoyed singing in various Barber Shop Quartets and Choruses. Bill was a current member of Woods Chapel, United Methodist Church, Lee’s Summit.

 

Besides his parents Bill was preceded in death by grandson, Ben Bond; brothers and their wives, James (Gwen) Corken and Jack (Margaret) Corken; and sister-in-law, Eleanor Corken. Survivors include his wife, Jean, Lee’s Summit; son, Craig Corken and his wife, Lisa, Rock Port; daughter, Laura Bond, and her husband, Sonne, Olathe, Kansas; grandchildren, Trent Corken, and his wife, Beth, Lincoln, Nebraska, Erica Barnes and her husband, Dustin, Fairfax, Missouri, Kaitlea Corken and fiancé, Ross Hastert, Rock Port, Joe Stricklin, Kansas City, Missouri, Krista Seelbach, Henderson, Texas, Carrie Bond, Rapid City, South Dakota, Jack Bond and Shannon Bond, Olathe, Kansas; great-granddaughter, Stella Bond, Rapid City; brother, Jerry Corken, Fort Worth, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

11:00 A.M., Saturday, May 3, 2014, Woods Chapel United Methodist Church, Lee’s Summit.
Graveside Service and Inurnment: 2:00 P.M., Sunday, May 4, 2014, Ohio Cemetery, Burlington Junction, Missouri.
