Lois M. Martin
1911-2012
Tarkio, Missouri

 

Lois Margaret Martin was born February 27, 1911, to the Rev. Montrose McMichael Brown, M.D. and Carrie Marie (Moyer) Brown, who were missionaries in Sargodha, India. Lois attended school in New Concord, Ohio and at Woodstock boarding school in Mussoorie, India. She graduated from New Concord High School in 1927. Lois entered Muskingum College, New Concord, graduating in 1932. She then attended Biblical Seminary in New York City, obtaining her Master’s degree in Religious Education in the spring of 1934. She worked for the Presbyteries of the Synod of New York as a Christian Educator.

 

On October 21, 1936, Lois was united in marriage to the Rev. Alfred Martin, in Akron, Ohio. They made their home in Lisbon, New York; Chester, West Virginia; and East Liverpool, Ohio, where Alfred pastored Presbyterian churches. In 1949 they moved to Tarkio where Alfred was a professor of Bible and Religion for Tarkio College. Lois was a part-time instructor for Bible and Religion for eleven years and also taught English for three years at Tarkio College. In 1963, they took a sabbatical to study and tour Italy, Greece, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Israel. In 1968 they took a semester off to study in Germany and tour Switzerland, France and the British Isles. Al passed away in September of 1981. Lois passed away Monday, December 10, 2012, at Community Hospital-Fairfax, Fairfax, Missouri, at the age of 101.

 

Lois was a member of the Tarkio Presbyterian Church since 1949. She was also a former member of the Women’s Church Group and was a member of the North Side Book Club.

 

Besides her parents and husband, Alfred, Lois was preceded in death by son, David Alfred Martin, M.D.; granddaughter, Cheryl Smith; sisters, Sarah Steele and Helen Giffen; and brothers, Harold and James Brown. Survivors include son, James Frederick Martin, Ph.D. and wife, Elva, Sidney, New York; daughter, Joyce Martin Kinsey, Omaha, Nebraska; three grandchildren, Jon Kinsey, Jennifer Martin and Stephanie Martin; four great-grandchildren, Jay Smith, Gracie and Anders Kinsey, and Tristan Eighmey.

 

Memorial Service: 11:00 A.M., Saturday, December 15, 2012, Tarkio Presbyterian Church, Tarkio.
A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.
There is no visitation.
