Raymond L. Horton was born June 24, 1921, west of Nemaha, Nebraska, to Lester and Carolina (Erdman) Horton. His early education was in Nebraska schools and he began his work life after the 8th grade due to the Depression. He was confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Langdon, Missouri.
Following his draft into the Army during World War II, he served at various locations with the most memorable being 22 months in Alaska. His correspondence courtship with Betty Underwood led to their marriage on December 16, 1944, in Hugo, Oklahoma. Upon completion of his service, they settled in the Langdon community where he began farming. He spent 14 years farming at various locations in Atchison County until allergies forced his transition to a new career in construction. The majority of his work years were spent tending to the plumbing needs of the community. Raymond passed away January 11, 2015, at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Rock Port, Missouri, at the age of 93.
Besides his parents and wife, Raymond was preceded in death by two infant brothers; sister, Eva Miller; son, Jerry; and great-grandson, Boone Gustafson.
Survivors include daughter, Cheryl Hurst, Raytown, Missouri; grandson, Christopher Hurst and wife, Mary, Overland Park, Kansas; granddaughter, Courtney Gustafson and husband, Noah, Lee’s Summit, Missouri; great-grandchildren, Katherine Hurst, and Georgia, Judah, and Anna Gustafson.
Memorial Service: 11:00 A.M., Saturday, January 17, 2015, Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port.
Inurnment: Elmwood Cemetery, Rock Port.
The family will receive friends from 10:30-11:00 A.M., Saturday, prior to the service, at Minter Funeral Chapel.
