I want to write this evening and extend my condolences to all of you as family, and friends of Paul Deatz. It was fitting to me personally that I was working in my shop at my parent’s farm last Friday when I received word from my sister of Paul’s passing. It is a cement block building that continues to serve us well since 1971 and bears the expert work of Paul as well as my father Ralph Boettner. They were good friends, farming partners, and neighbors for so many years. In serving as pastor for the Rock Port Baptist Church I appreciate the times that Paul has visited, and Lois as well, and that he did not forget us as his life moved him to Mound City. We have interceded for all of you today in worship, and we are confident that although Paul may be now absent from his earthly body he is present with the Lord. I can say with confidence that he has was a good and faithful servant. Paul exemplified to me a wonderful balance between tough, hard work and being firm with people, but also caring and compassionate. Few attained this kind of maturity as well as he did in my sight. One special memory I have was when I tried to speak as a high school student at a community Easter sunrise service in Rock Port, and frankly, I did a horrible job. Embarassed and confused by my lack of preparation and poor presentation, Paul was the one person who came to me after the service, shook my hand, put his arm around me and simply said, “Richard, someday you will be a preacher”. That memory has helped my many times to proclaim God’s Word with confidence and continue in my service to Him. I will never forget the personal encouragement he gave me, along with his brother-in-law and sister Delmas and Bonnie Howell, in later years. Although my wife and I will be on the road to Sedalia, MO tomorrow and we will not be able to attend the service with all of you, I have encouraged others from the Rock Port Baptist Church to come, where Paul has been remembered today and held in high regard. May God extend to each of you His peace and comfort. Love in Christ, Richard Boettner, Pastor Rock Port Baptist Church
