Paul Edward “Ned” Seymour was born January 29, 1944, in St. Francis Hospital, Maryville, Missouri to Paul and Louise (Burke) Seymour. He passed away at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Rock Port, Missouri, on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, with his wife, Judy and daughter, Lori at his side.

Ned grew up and worked on the family farm east of Tarkio, Missouri. He was expected to do chores every day and be a contributing member of the family. He attended York Presbyterian Church, just down the road from his home where he professed his faith. He attended Elementary School at Elkdale near Fairfax and Morning Star, east of Tarkio. In high school, Ned was interested in math and science and was active in sports, lettering in football, basketball, and track. He went on to graduate Valedictorian of his class from Tarkio R-1 in 1962 and then attended Northwest Missouri State University.

June 14, 1964, Ned married Judith Houghton, his wife for almost 62 years. He always said that he was married his entire adult life. They welcomed one daughter to the family, Lori Denise. Over the years, Ned owned Seymour’s Phillips 66 Service, then was the parts-man at Tarkio Truck and Tractor, sold insurance for Tarkio Valley Insurance Agency, and finished his career as a Bookkeeper for Farmers and Valley Bank which later became Farmers State Bank, retiring in 2010. He served his community through Tarkio Chamber of Commerce, Tarkio Lions Club, as a volunteer fireman for Tarkio Fire Department, a board member of Tarkio Golf Club, and a longtime member of the Tarkio Board of Public Works. He was especially proud of building a new water tower during his tenure and making improvements to upgrade the water system while maintaining fiscal integrity for the community.

As a young man he enjoyed playing Snooker, riding his Harley, and playing fast pitch softball. Then, he moved on to fishing and being on the water. Many happy weeks were spent on vacation at the family home on Lake of the Ozarks. In the fall, Ned loved hunting everything from frogs to pheasants and geese. When the golf course was built, he found a game that he loved almost more than any other. Although he considered himself late to the game age wise, he achieved a hole in one twice in Tarkio and was men’s club champion one year. Ned organized many tournaments, enjoyed playing couples golf with his wife, and encouraged his daughter to play. During summers, the family social life revolved around golf on the Tarkio Course and other courses in the area. Ned was an avid supporter of the girls’ golf teams Judy coached. He was always supportive of school activities and willing to help out whether it be by driving a bus, helping sponsor a sock hop, going on senior trip, and was often found in the bleachers cheering on kids playing the sports he had loved while in high school. He was a great fan of the Chiefs and Mizzou.

Ned was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ford and Zeta Burke, Ed and Anna Seymour; his parents, Paul and Louise Seymour; his sister, Anne (Seymour) Will; and nephew, Eric Will. Survivors include his wife, Judith; his daughter, Lori; brother-in-law, Darwin (Georgia) Houghton; niece, LeAnne (Ted) Nash and nephew, Trevor (Mendy) Houghton; great nephew, Mason, and great nieces, Emma, Lilliana, and Ellie Houghton.

Phyllis Jane (Ivy) Ottmann, the daughter of Harry Hamilton and Florence Katherine (Mather) Ivy, was born December 22, 1944, in Maryville, Missouri. She grew up in Tarkio, Missouri with fond memories of her aunts, uncles, and cousins close by. She attended Tarkio High School, graduating in 1962. After high school, she completed one year of college at Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville.

Phyllis was known for her quick wit and sense of humor, often joking that she would “never do two things- marry a farmer or a Rock Port Blue Jay.” Life, of course, had other plans. On March 30, 1968, she married Keith Ottmann- both a farmer and a Rock Port Blue Jay- at the First Christian Church in Tarkio. Together, they built a life rooted in love, laughter, and family, and were blessed with three children: Stacy, Ryan, and Nancy.

A devoted wife and mother, Phyllis poured her heart into caring for her family. While her children were in school, she worked part-time at The Sampler Dress Shop and Stoner Drug, where many came to know her friendly smile and warm conversation. She was also known for her meticulous work wallpapering homes, taking great pride in doing things carefully and beautifully, a reflection of her attention to detail and strong work ethic. She was deeply committed to her community and affectionately known by many as “Aunt P.”

Phyllis was a very active member of the First Lutheran Church in Rock Port, Missouri, where she served on numerous church boards through the years. She generously gave her time to the community of Rock Port and throughout Atchison County.

Phyllis had a remarkable artistic talent and a creative spirit that touched everyone around her. She expressed her creativity through sewing, often making costumes with care and imagination, as well as through stained glass and painting. One of her greatest joys was sharing her love of art with her grandchildren, patiently teaching them to paint, encouraging their creativity, and creating memories they will cherish forever.

She loved traveling and especially enjoyed hosting gatherings in her home, where everyone was made to feel welcome. Phyllis had a gift for making everything fun, turning ordinary moments into celebrations. When it came time to order dessert, you didn’t choose just one, you ordered the entire menu selection. Phyllis was an incredible cook, a thoughtful gift giver, and someone who delighted in doing for others.

Phyllis was a loving, natural caretaker, not only to her family, but also to friends and even friends of friends. She always put others before herself, offering help, comfort, and encouragement wherever it was needed. Above all else, she cherished her family, her universe, and found her greatest joy in spending time with them and supporting them in every way she could. Her words often reflected her joyful outlook on life, with her favorite phrase being “the most fun” and “that was THE BEST EVER”.

Besides her parents, Phyllis was preceded in death by father-in-law, Raymond Ottmann and mother-in-law, Virginia Ottmann; brother-in-law, Gary Bennington. Survivors include husband, Keith Ottmann, Rock Port; children, Stacy (Roger) Bundridge, Maryville, Ryan (Rachel) Ottmann, Rock Port, and Nancy (Tim) Shipley, Maryville; grandchildren, Jansen (Adriana) Bundridge, Skylar (Joseph) Krause, Renner Shipley, Lucy Ottmann, Evve Shipley, and twins, River and Lillian Ottmann; great grandson, Wells Bundridge; sister, Sue (Ivy) Smith, Galesburg, Illinois; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jayne Ann Bennington, Rock Port, and James (Rita) Ottmann, Tarkio; numerous nieces and nephews; beloved dog, Millie Ottmann.

Melvin Eugene “Mel” Miles, son of Walter Marion and Anna Elizabeth “Beth” (Holmes) Miles, was born on February 18, 1935, in rural Holt County, Mound City, Missouri. He attended Elkdale School and Fairfax High School, Fairfax, Missouri, graduating in 1952. On January 16, 1958, Mel entered the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri and Fort Knox in Kentucky. While at Fort Knox, Mel met the love of his life, Thelma Jean “T.J.” Stevens. On December 23, 1959, they were married in Depauw, Indiana. On January 15, 1960, Mel received an honorable discharge from the Army. Soon after, Mel and T.J. moved southeast of Fairfax, Missouri, to the Harry and Elsie Miles farm. This farm is just north of the Miles home place and farm where Mel was raised; both farms are now honored as a Missouri Century Farm. Mel and T.J. have lived on the farm their entire married life where they raised their daughters, Lori and Susan.

Mel dearly loved his family and many friends, and they all loved him. He also loved farming with great passion. He began at age seven and spent nine decades farming the family land as well as renting the John and Fay Bowness farm and custom farming. Mel was so thankful to farm with T.J. by his side. Their daughters began helping at a young age, and he was very thankful for their continued dedication to the family farm also shared by their husbands. Mel and T.J. are very thankful for their Grandson Miles Smith continuing to farm the family land. Mel was a member of the Fairfax Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon, and the New Liberty Cemetery Board. Mel and his family are thankful for his good care while a resident of Tiffany Heights Care Center in Mound City, Missouri, since January. He will be sorely missed by the staff and resident friends. They are also thankful for the good care of Three Rivers Hospice.
